Traum is the son of Morgenglanz*E* (Neumünster Champion, 1967.) He is half-sister to Traumfee (dam of TROY), and was bred by Edith Kosterka. Traum was called a" darker version of his father", and from descriptions of him as a colt, was described as having bold, ground covering gaits. Watching him in Mrs. Kosterka's pasture "it seems as if one has gone back in time and is watching a young Morgenglanz years ago running free and playing in the grass." He is known to have sired Agustus, the 1991 bay stallion (out of Abba, by Troubadour*Pg*E*).
Traum was one of the eighteen special Trakehners willed to the University after Mrs. Kosterka's death in 1995. Not a fan of University Life, he was stabled off campus for a number of years, where he was lightly ridden. Circumstances dictated that he be returned to the VetMed facility, where he rapidly went into a deep decline. Within one week of his return, Traum was down in his stall, not eating or drinking. He rapidly improved when his companion animal "Daisy" (miniature donkey shown below) was returned to him. After several months of being nursed back to health, and with Daisy faithfully at his side, he was allowed to be adopted. He gradually returned to his more youthful vigor, and was again able to be ridden regularly.
